The Corcoran Police Department K-9 Unit

The Corcoran Police Department K-9 Unit is an essential tool in the department’s proactive approach to the suppression of the use and distribution of illegal narcotics in the City of Corcoran.

Currently there is one K-9 team in the Police Department:   Officer/ Handler Laura Duran and K-9 Simba.  Simba is a 7 year old Golden Labrador Retriever. Simba has been active with the department since 2003. 

Officer Duran and her K-9 Partner Simba completed a rigorous five week instructional course which consisted of 200 hours in specialized narcotic detection training.  Simba is trained to detect the odors of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine and is re-certified annually by the California Narcotic Canine Association. 

One of the K-9 Unit's goals is to increase community relations through demonstrations at schools, public events, etc.  The K-9 Unit participates in Red Ribbon Week and assists in search warrants, parole, and probation searches, prison searches, and is often called to assist surrounding law enforcement agencies and speciality units.
