The Corcoran Police Department K-9 Unit is an essential tool in the department’s proactive approach to the suppression of the use and distribution of illegal narcotics in the City of Corcoran.
Currently there is one K-9 team in the Police Department: Officer/ Handler Laura Duran and K-9 Simba.Simba is a 7 year old Golden Labrador Retriever. Simba has been active with the department since 2003.
Officer Duran and her K-9 Partner Simba completed a rigorous five week instructional course which consisted of 200 hours in specialized narcotic detection training.Simba is trained to detect the odors of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine and is re-certified annually by the California Narcotic Canine Association.
One of the K-9 Unit's goals is to increase community relations through demonstrations at schools, public events, etc. The K-9 Unit participates in Red Ribbon Week and assists in search warrants, parole, and probation searches, prison searches, and is often called to assist surrounding law enforcement agencies and speciality units.
